Dayton boasts one of the highest concentrations of engineers and patents in the US, with aerospace and high tech bolstering its economy. Dayton is run by a commission, comprised of the mayor and four commissioners who are elected for four-year terms. The commission passes ordinances and resolutions, adopts regulations, and appoints the city manager. The manager oversees the day-to-day workings of about 20 departments that provide such services as water supply and treatment, police protection, and street and bridge maintenance.
