Summary: The City of Lawrence Municipal Court handles violations of city ordinances, including traffic and parking violations within the city limits. A full-time Judge appointed by the City Manager presides over all court proceedings and is responsible for the adjudication of all cases under applicable statutes and ordinances. The non-judicial functions of the court are under the direction of the City Attorney and the supervision of the Court Manager. The support staff consists of a Senior Court Clerk and six Court Clerks. Responsibilities: The Court Clerk is responsible for a variety of administrative and clerical tasks in both a courtroom and office setting. Key responsibilities include processing fine payments and various notices and court documents, preparing court dockets, completing data entry, filing documents electronically, answering phones, and assisting the public. This position will interact with attorneys, law enforcement officers, city prosecutor staff, the Judge, and the public on a daily basis. This position will be trained in every area of court operations and will be responsible for handling money accurately, maintaining confidentiality with court records, and completing multiple tasks daily with many interruptions. Qualifications: Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade and two years of responsible clerical or administrative work, preferably in the court system. A strong working knowledge of MS Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel, is essential. This position requires excellent attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple tasks and work as a member of a team. The ideal candidate will have strong customer service skills, experience working with the public, and excellent communication skills. Must be able to work effectively and accurately in a fast-paced environment with numerous distractions. Must be able to handle difficult situations with professionalism and tact. Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required. Experience with legal terminology is highly preferred. The successful candidate must pass a background check and a post-offer physical and drug screen.
