South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC), is the law in these here parts. The cabinet-level agency is governed by a director who is appointed by the governor. SCDC runs nearly 30 high, medium, and minimum security prisons and community work centers housing around 23,000 inmates. Death Row inmates are housed near Ridgeville, South Carolina. The state spends about $16,000 per inmate per year. The Division of Programs and Services gives prisoners the opportunity to learn a skill or take classes. Inmates also build furniture and make license plates, signs, and apparel as part of the Prison Industries program.
